FAQs Barcodes

How do I get a barcode?

Barcode IDs are issued upon successful completion of initial Orientation & Training and initial Competency testing for any instrument based POCT. Consult your manager for initial Orientation & Training and initial Competency testing.

How long will I have to wait before getting my initial barcode ID?

Most barcode IDs are issued within 1-3 days of successful completion of testing requirements and are given to the unit manager to distribute to staff. If you have not received your barcode after 3 business days, consult with POCT Services.

When will I get a new barcode after I have completed my recertification test?

Barcode IDs are not reissued after annual recertification testing. The POCT software is updated to reflect the recertification is up to date, which in turn reactivates the current barcode ID. A working barcode ID indicates the employee is current with required testing.

My barcode is not working, what's the problem?

Barcode IDs become inactive when the recertification anniversary date has passed. Annual recertification is mandatory. Complete the recertification process (Competency test) and submit the paperwork to the POCT Services and if passed successfully the barcode ID will be reactivated.

Barcode IDs are also dependent on the instrument recognizing them. If a glucose meter is not reading your barcode ID, first try to download the meter. If that does not solve the problem, caontact POCT Services.

Another possible problem would be a laser scanner not being able to read the barcode. Be sure the laser window is clean and free of moisture, film, or debris.

Check for damage to actual barcode ID. If damaged or lost, contact POCT Services.

Can I allow another employee use my barcode if their's isn't working?

No! An active barcode ID indicates the employee has been Oriented & Trained, and has passed either their initial Competency test or their annual Competency test.

The barcode ID is tied to your identity as an employee and your test records. Patient results performed under the use of your barcode ID indicate you performed the test and you are responsible for those results.

Sharing a barcode ID is never allowed. This would be like sharing your computer password – not allowed.

If a barcode ID has been left at home, lost, or damaged or for some reason does not work, the employee may not perform POCT until they have obtained a working barcode ID. Consult with POCT Services.

I left my barcode at home, how can I perform the patient's test?

An actively working barcode ID is required to perform POCT. See Q&A above.

What's imbedded in the barcode?

Either your state license number (RN, MD, etc) or a number that POCT Services assigned to you if you are unlicensed and other personal identifying information.
